Pagers Still Play an Important Role

Starting in the 1990s, people began taking pagers off their hips and replacing them with mobile phones

. Pagers are like the middle man. In order to get a hold of someone, you have to go through the pager and then a phone. People began cutting out the middle man. But, while pagers may seem obsolete in modern, everyday activities, paging systems still play a major role in the 21st century.

Nowadays, most paging systems use alphanumeric pagers. Basically, this means the pager is given an email address, usually consisting of the phone number. Two-way alphanumeric pagers are capable of both sending and receiving text messages and email. Essentially, they work like a cell phone without the ability to actually call. And, in some situations, this is incredibly beneficial.

Pager transmitters are still used in places where mobile phones typically cannot reach users, and also in places where the operation of the radio transmitters contained in mobile phones is problematic or prohibited. A perfect example of this would be in hospitals where cell coverage is often weak or nonexistent. Additionally, in a hospital, radio transmitters can interfere with medical equipment. This it's common to see hospitals utilizing paging systems.

Other common fields where paging systems are used include:

Emergency Personnel

Police, coastal, and local government emergency coordinators

Security services

Some construction staffs (i.e. mining)

IT industry

Railway staff

Certain high-security government and corporate locations

To some, pagers may seem like a thing of the past. They may seem like dinosaurs in a world of rapid technological expansion. But, in reality, they've kept up with technology. Pagers have evolved along with technology, and they're still an active industry. In fact, in 2008, the U.S. paging industry brought in over $2.1 billion. So, if you work in a field where cell phones cause a problem, don't overlook what's already out therepagers.
