Tablets Versus Computers
One of the most often asked questions I get these days is should I get a tablet (iPad or Android) or computer
? The answer depends entirely on what you plan to do with your tablet. The strong point of any tablet is entertainment, personal activities, and portability.Thats not to say that you cant use your tablet for business type applications but the whole scenario of a touch screen is all about graphics and not so much about text based applications.
Lets talk about the two most popular tablets and see how they actually work.My recommendations are if you have an iPhone get a an iPad and if you have an android phone get a Toshiba Thrive. The reason is that the two devices link naturally and if you install an application on one it automatically installs on the other. So you only have to learn one operating system and have common applications on both devices.
Both tablets can have keyboard and mice attached through a base that you can connect your tablet to and do things like spreadsheets or presentations that are more text based. And you can still just grab the tablet and go so the portability is still there when you need.I do think that the Toshiba is a little better unit for business applications due to the use of the Google online office applications and Quickoffice HD Pro working seamlessly. The iPad does have a version of the iWork series (page, numbers, keynote) that works well.
I have a Toshiba Thrive since I have an Android phone.I can do about 90% of what I can do with my computer on my tablet. There are a few incompatibilities with both tablets due to the nature of the browsers on tablets. The iPad has problems with flash since its not compatible out of the box but there are add on applications that can help with that somewhat. You may get the same message, browser not compatible with our website, on either flavor of tablet but websites are slowly adapting. One very irrating issue on the iPad is the developers who just used the same application for the iPad as the iPhone and didnt take the time to adjust to larger screen.
I use my tablet far more for entertainment than I do for business purposes. But thats more due to the fact that I have several laptops and they are always a few steps away.Could I exist on just a tablet, probably, but it would take some adjustment on my part and a few work arounds on some software.I use my tablet a lot for playing movies on my TV or music on my stereo.Thats where the tablets really shine along with games.
The good news about tablets is there are very few virus or malware issues although I still have virus and malware installed on my tablet. And for simple emails, viewing just about anything, and portability the tablet is every bit as good as a computer. So if you are flexible, not to heavy on the business use, you certainly could get by with a tablet for travel or home.I would still stick with a computer at work, its just easier and no tweaking is necessary.
