Tackling The Manitou Incline

Denver is a city that is home to a great amount of outdoor activity

. Anyone who enjoys being outside in the beautiful forests of the southwestern United States will love taking a hike up Manitou Incline.

The incline was finished in the year 1907 and was a 1 mile cable line built to support the building of a hydroelectric plant. After the plant was completed, it was bought to serve as a tourist attraction.

It was used in the early twentieth century to bring tourists up to the top of Mount Manitou. It was a 16 minute ride that, once reached, led to ten miles of trails now used for hiking.

Visitors to the Manitou Incline sat in open cars that were pulled along a track to the top. They were able to see majestic views of the valley below.

The attraction had a long history of fires and rock slides. It was closed and reopened many times over the span of the 1900's due to these natural disasters.

In the 1990's, due to another rock slide, the Manitou track was closed yet again. After this problematic event, the managers of the site decided to close down the cable track for good and focus their energy and resources on other tourism projects.

However, this site has remained a popular place for visitors of Denver to visit, despite the lack of the railway. Those that now visit the incline opt to run, hike, jog, walk, or even crawl up the trail.

Manitou Incline is one of the steepest hikes recorded in the United States. It is a very short trail, somewhere between three quarters and a mile.

However, hikers experience an increase of two thousand feet over the period of time it takes to hike to the very top. The hike is very picturesque and is something that any Denver visitor who is capable should visit.

The steepness of the trail keeps this hike from being appropriate for all ages. Younger and older people may have a difficult time reaching the top of the trail, and should probably refrain from attempting if if they are unprepared.

Though the trail is short, it can take hours to finish. Even some of the most experienced hikers have difficulty reaching the top without getting tired or out of breath.

If you plan on hiking the Manitou Incline, be sure to have a sturdy and broken in pair of hiking boots or shoes. Because much of the cable track was left on the trail, it does have step-like regions that make it a bit easier to climb.

If you are attempting the summit of Mount Manitou during the summer, be sure to bring lots of water. Though Colorado is home to beautiful weather, you may find yourself getting dehydrated in the heat of the sun.

You must be very careful not to overwork yourself. Take the trail slowly and gradually, so as not to overwork yourself.

Many different athletes travel from afar to train on the Manitou Incline. If you feel that you have the athletic and aerobic stamina, you can increase the speed in which you make it up the trail.

Those that would gain the most benefit from the use of the trail to exercise would be athletes like runners, soccer players, football players, mountain bikers, and basketball players. The trail requires a great deal of cardiovascular endurance.

If you enjoy photography as a pastime and think that you will be able to make it up the incline with your equipment, you will not regret bringing it along. The view from the top is some of the most beautiful scenery in the western United States.

Once you have reached the top, it is best not to come back down the same way. The incline is so steep that it can be very harmful to the knees and joints and can also cause confusion or stress on the ascending hikers.

Once you have reached Mount Manitou or Eagles Nest at the top, connect head south and connect with the Barr trail, which will provide less of an incline and lead right to the parking lot. The Manitou Incline is a fun excursion outside of Denver for those that love a challenge in the outdoors.
