Tail Options For Surfboards

If you are new to surfing, you have probably looked around at surf shops and seen different styles of surfboards

. What you may not realize is that the tail options for these boards serve a purpose and are there for more than just looks. It is important to understand what the tail options are and under what conditions you would want that type of tail on your surfboard.

The most common tail option is the squash tail. This tail works well for beginners and experienced surfers alike because it offers a stable ride. However, this tail also allows the board to remain loose for more control. It is best for both small and overhead waves, so it is a very versatile board.

A variation of the squash tail is the thumb tail, which has no hard edge. This tail gives the board more stability, which is great for beginners. It is also good for rail to rail surfing and large turns in medium to very large surf. The rounded pin tail is very similar to this, but is more pinched toward the tail. It offers the tightest holding rail, and is a popular tail for single fin boards. It is also good for medium to large waves, as well as hollow surf.

The regular pin tail has a much sharper point to it than the rounded pin tail or the thumb tail. If large, powerful, hollow waves are what you are dying to try, this is the board for you. It is not a board for beginners, but is a great board for tube riders.

If you want a more old school board, you could go with a square tail. This is the precursor to the squash tail, and isn't really used on new surfboards unless you have one shaped. The advantage to this board is that it has great maneuverability thanks to the rails meeting the tail at sharp corners. It is best for small to head high waves.

The swallow tail is perfect for surfing smaller waves and is the favorite for beginners. This tail shape combines the rail drive of the square tail with the control of the pin tail. This is a wider tail that gives paddling power and power in the small waves favored by novice surfers. The baby swallow tail is very similar but is much smaller, making it perfect for big wave surfing. Similar in performance to the swallow tail is the bat tail, which is good for small to overhead waves but provides the surfer with greater stability. It is one of the more modern tail shapes.

If you aren't sure about what tail shape is right for your surfboard, you can talk to a professional in a surf shop or to a board shaper. In fact, it can be beneficial to have your board shaped in the area you will be surfing in. These shapers are more knowledgeable about the surfing conditions in that area, and will know what type of tail shape is best for your surfboards.
