Taiwan - An unusual destination with lots of excitement

Taiwan might not come across as one of the most preferred tourist destinations in the world, but owing to its dynamism and the enthusiasm that is evident in its every part, travellers from all over the world are now turning their attention to this unorthodox Asian paradise.

Taipei: At one point in time, the streets if Taipei were crowded with taxis, buses and scooters, with the sidewalks 'brimming' with people in as much the negative context as one can imagine. The architecture was flawed, with no sense of planning evident. However, post-1980s, the situation began improving, and 30 years later, the city is one of the most computer savvy places in the world. When one walks these streets, there is not much of a realisation of the kind of effort and hard-work that was put in by the government authorities to lead the quintessential 'rags to riches' story with regards to an entire city! There is nothing specifically of interest here, but the experience of spending time in this dynamic city is what attracts thousands of tourists every month to Taipei.

Wuali: A tiny village at the initial onset, Wulai is today prides itself over being one of the best hot spring resorts in Taiwan, and probably even in Asia. Although there were apprehensions initially regarding the quality of water, the same has been taken care of during the past few years. Even for those who are not exactly keen on taking a dip, there are numerous activities that can be undertaken, like hiking, river tracing, picnicking and even swimming in the cool mountain streams in the adjoining jungle. There are also waterfalls aplenty in these jungles, some accessible just off the road, while some hidden deep like secrets, known only to few.

Penghu: Also known as the Pescadores, Penghu is famous the world over for its marvellous temples, sun-kissed beaches and Chinese style homes that are enclosed within walls constructed out of coral. Besides these, the winters here make it the windiest place in the northern hemisphere, and that is not a negative whatsoever, for there are scores of windsurfers who flock here during this season. Some even refer to Penghu as the 'Canary Islands of the Orient'. Basically, it's a dry town that has grasslands on a majority portion of its land, and is a refreshing change from the subtropical climate present in the mountainous terrain in the rest of Taiwan. The coastlines, which have unfortunately been eroded of water, have eye-catching basalts cliffs and reefs, apart from some of the best Taiwanese beaches.

Lanyu: The local Yami people refer to this island asPongso No Tao' or Island of the People'. Strangely, the same place is known to the Taiwanese as Lanyu (Orchid Island) only because of the flowers that are present here. Geologically speaking, it is a volcanic island that has massive scores of rainforests all over, with coral reefs surrounding the rocky coastline. In short, Lanyu is a tropical paradise, with something for everyone.
