Meenakshi Temple: In the heart of the city lies Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple around which the city has grown. It is a holy place of worship for both Hindus and Musilms. The perfect timing to visit this location is April which has 14 day festival celebration in the honor of Lord Murugan win over the demon Suran and his divine marriage to Devasena, the daughter of Indra. The legendary states that this is auspicious for the newly married couples.
Naicker Mahal: It is the palace of the 17th century ruler Thirumailai Nayak. The palace complex area was divided into two houses as swargavilasa, the kings darbar and ranka vilas for servants which later been used as Government property.
Sundaram Park & Chappati Park: This place is one of the known parks in Madurai, the park is bundled with pedal boats, toy trains and even horse riding options available to make your evening a perfect end in Sundaram Park.
If youre hungry and stomach is ready for a wonderful supper, then as the name implies Chappati Park is an ideal location for its huge varieties of chappatis on offer. The vegetable stuffing in chapptis are extremely creative.
Shopping: Madurai is a treat for saree lovers as the city is famous for cotton Sungudi (cotton) and handloom sarees. The city is also known for its exquisite Kundan jewelry and handicrafts.
The ideal place to shop all these items is at the backyard of the Meenaskhi temple which explores shopping options in Prithu Mandapam. It is an old hall with many pillars which is very close to Pottramarai tank, where one can shop in a majestic view.
