Even though you've probably been taught over and over about several common sense home security measures that everyone should take on a day-to-day basis, in the rush of the moment people often forget to take those steps. That's why it's such a good idea to review some of the easy ways you can increase your safety. Here are a few simple ways that people put themselves at risk when they don't put enough thought or effort into their home security.

3. People forget to lock the door when they are home, or they leave their back door unlocked. Even if you feel like you know your neighbors and your community, this is a big no-no. The reality is that there are always strangers who pass through every community, including Rockford, and you don't know what they're capable of. You may also feel like you've known someone for years and then someday wake up to be surprised by something they've done that you didn't think was possible. So it is always, always, important to lock your doors, even if you are at home because an unlocked door makes it way too easy for a criminal to get inside.

2. People install a home security system and then forget to turn it on. If you've installed a home alarm and put stickers and yard signs up telling everyone that your house is guarded by an alarm, that's a great step that will surely help deter crime. Yet, your alarm is only as effective as you allow it to be, and when it is turned off, it can't do anything. So if a criminal isn't scared away by the signs you have posted and they try to break in, your alarm can't help stop them or notify the police if you haven't turned it on. It's as simple as entering your password, which takes mere seconds. So don't forget to turn your alarm on regularly.

Everyone knows that people often place a spare key under their doormat or in a fake rock near their front door so never leave a key in either of those places because they are way too common. Leaving a spare key outside of your house is always a bad idea because a determined or experienced criminal will likely be able to find it, even if it takes a little time. And if you ever end up using the spare key, anyone who sees you pick it up and unlock your door will know where you keep it! Don't make the mistake of giving criminals a free entrance into your home.
