Taking A Dominican Holiday

For many, a very popular destination for a holiday is the Dominican Republic

. Where Mexico, Hawaii, and possibly Europe, are frequently 'on the table' for couples considering their honeymoon destinations, the Dominican often wins out. It is a beautiful country with a rich culture, fewer crowds, and less expensive accommodations, than many of its counterparts. Also, the country is on par with other Caribbean countries in terms of its natural environment. The Dominican is an easy choice for those who want to forgo a large expense and crowded attractions that are typical of other vacation hotspots.

Punta Cana is the main area for travelers to visit. There are a few resorts and hotels, but nothing that is overbearing to the natural environment or that overshadows the local culture. The climate is tropical, so pack the sunscreen and always carry drinking water. There is a wet season from May to November, but May is the wettest month of the year. Tropical cyclones touch down occasionally, but they are usually small and occur along the southern coast of the island. Hurricanes are rare, as they can only occur over water. The last hurricane to make landfall was in 1979.

Marine related activities are the most popular in Punta Cana, especially fishing. Charters can be booked, and deep sea catches are always successful. Incredible diving opportunities exist in the tropical waters, that are a draw to experts and novices alike. For those that enjoy the pleasure of sailing, charters are available around the island of Hispaniola. Watch the waters for whales, sharks, and even a few dolphins. Great cuisine can be had at the local restaurants, and dining out is the perfect way to end a day of sailing in the lovely waters of the Caribbean.

If possible, try to schedule your trip to the Dominican Republic during one of the annual holidays. Arrive before the Dominican Independence Day on February 27th, and witness the colourful celebrations of national pride. Take part in the festivals, watch a parade, eat some local cuisine - make your holiday memorable! The other big holiday in the Dominican is Duarte's Day on January 26th, as it commemorates the life of one of the founding fathers, Juan Pablo Duarte y Diez. Also, since the Dominican is a Catholic nation, the people observe Catholic holidays.

Dominican holidays, whether it is your vacation or a scheduled event in the Dominican, are an opportunity to appreciate the culture of the nation alongside a richly endowed environment. Skip the well travelled routes of past vacations, and book into the Dominican Republic for this year's plan. A mellow and rejuvenating experience will be had.
