Taking A Look At Five Of The Most Iconic Film Cars Of All Time

No matter whether you're a driver and proud car owner or not

, chances are you'll be able to name at least a handful of popular and famous cars that have appeared in movies - and the following five are arguably the most popular and famous of them all.

1. DeLorean DMC-12 - regularly voted the most iconic and memorable film car of all time, the DeLorean DMC-12 featured in the Back To The Future trilogy, starting in 1985.

The production of the DMC-12 began in 1981 and around 9,000 were manufactured in Ireland during nearly two years of production.

To the delight of many Back To The Future fans, the DeLorean entered production once again in 2007, this time in Texas and with only a minimal number manufactured every 12 months. Nearly 30 years after the initial launch, the modern DeLorean's are priced at around 57,000 US dollars - 45,000 US dollars more than in 1981.

2. Aston Martin DB5 - although a particularly popular car in its own right, Aston Martin's DB5 is now known first and foremost as being synonymous with James Bond, starring in no less than five 007 films to date.

With a 4.0 litre engine, 282 bhp and a top speed of 145 miles per hour, the DB5 first featured in 1964's Goldfinger and most recently was the star of Casino Royale in 2006.

3. Pontiac Firebird Trans Am - made famous as KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand), the car that spoke to David Hasselhoff in the massively popular Knight Rider TV series, the 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am that was used was available with up to a 5.7 litre V8 engine, three, four or five speed gearbox (manual or automatic) and was one of the fastest cars on the American market during the 1980s.

Although Knight Rider returned in 2008, the original Pontiac Firebird Trans Am wasn't used and a Ford Shelby GT500KR played the part of KITT instead - just as powerful of a car, but not as popular as the original Firebird.

4. Volkswagen Beetle - originally known as the Type 1, the VW Beetle entered production in 1938 and continued for 65 years until it ceased in 2003.

Although there's no doubt that the Beetle was a successful car without any involvement from Hollywood, the fact it was the star of the Herbie series of films, which first started in 1968, are said to have helped with sales tremendously.

A 1963 model that was used for racing and which had a mind of its own, each of the six films were huge successes and cemented the popularity of VW's Beetle.

5. Jaguar E-Type - first entering Jaguar dealers in 1961, the E-Type models were hugely successful for Jaguar during the full 14 years that they were produced.

The popularity of the cars peaked once again in 1997 when a 1967 soft top model was given a full Union Jack paintjob and used in Mike Myers' hit comedy, Austin Powers, a film series that took people back to the so-called 'Swinging Sixties', a time when the E-Type was at it's most popular.
