Taking A Stroll Down Memory Lane: The Class Reunions
One look around the room and you'll know you've got the right place; a small
, square room adorned with blackboards on the right side. A teacher stands at the front of the Classroom, trying to engage the aged pupils sitting in the seats in front of her: Class Clown, Mathlete, Science Geek, Prom Queen, Jock, Punk, Shy Girl, Stoner,Jerk, Nerd, Bully, Slut, Misfit; the complete diaspora of personality types that make up a school classroom. 10, 20, 30, 40 years pass by time for the Class Reunion, do you go?
It's a small decision, but it's one we all have to make, and sometimes stirs up memories long thought dead and buried. Your decision to go to your class reunion is based on many factors. Factors that usually come back to how you felt during your time in school and where you stood in the lion pit that is formal education. If you're comfortable with what's become of you, or have more positive memories from school you're more likely to attend.
It's an interesting experiment, the idea of a class reunion, because humans are a curious species with an undying proclivity to poking their noses into other people's business. People cannot resist the urge to test the age old idea that the bully and jocks end up broke, fat and in trailer homes and the outcasts, under dogs and nerds end up hitting it big in Hollywood, business and alike. Has the unassuming girl become a Broadway star? The quarter back a stay at home dad? These questions we all ask ourselves from our freshman year and onward will only be revealed through time.
Nothing is static. It is time that is the great equalizer. Through the years we grow old, get fat, lose our hair and hoard or squander our riches. As the years trudge on we suffer and we experience joy and people come in and out of our lives. Class reunions can reunite us with some of the people who have walked out for various reasons. It can also reunite us with a part of ourselves we may have forgotten through the years that pile up upon us.
One of the biggest push factors when choosing to attend a class reunion is that very thought, of seeing ourselves as we once were. It's the idea of reuniting with our seventeen year old selves that we shot dead when we graduated. It's seeing where we've come and how we've grown, for better or for worse, which keeps people linked to their class reunions.
Of course, class reunions are a mixed bag. For some, attending is a great experience bringing them back to their days on top or with an old lover, for others it's a trip down a road they never want to walk again. Attending your class reunion inevitably forces us to embrace our desire to compare one another, to put ourselves and our peers on the pedestal. For the alumni who feel comfortable in their current skin, the class reunion is a wonderful blast from the past. For others, with pasts tarnished by unpleasant experiences, the invite to a class reunion can be less than a favourable walk down memory lane.
