Taking Back Your Sofa - A Story of How To Work Home

Taking Back Your Sofa - A Story of How To Work Home

I was speaking to a friend, Claire, recently who had recently and had started to work from home. She had recently been made redundant from a job at a large corporate company and was starting up an online business that would enable her to earn an income she has now lost whilst also getting to spend more time with her Six year old daughter, Aniya. Claire, having been a Trainer all her career she had decided to offer an online training facility that people could turn to and develop their business skills online.

As we talked it was clear her business idea was sound but she was struggling to get the results she had so wanted. Her lifelong dream had been to run her own business and she felt like she was failing. She asked for my help.

We started with the basics and discussed what she did on a daily basis and how she was managing her business and her time. Within minutes it was clear that Claire was getting distracted and struggling to get to grips with the 'work from home' lifestyle. I asked her where she did her work. She replied 'On my laptop, on the sofa.' As we went through my own little checklist it was clear this was not the only issue. She had no real 'work' space for her to focus in and was often watching TV during the day.

She was obviously down and admitted feeling (unnecessarily!!) like she was a failure. We went to work.

In the time it takes to watch an episode of Eastenders we had made some real progress. By simply moving some furniture around we had set her up an 'office' where she could organise her work and leave it (safely!) away from Aniya's mischievous hands.

We had set out a plan for her to work to her strengths. She was a morning person by nature. So we set her a daily schedule which allowed her to do her work in the mornings with an extra hour when Aniya went to bed. This meant Claire could spend time with her daughter when she came home from school, do the weekly chores and shopping whilst never compromising her business goals. She was going to be working in small, ultra productive bursts that meant she got a day's work done in half a day!

Claire was going to speak to her husband, Phil, and Aniya so they knew what she was going to be doing. She was going to get their full support and help. Claire had picked out some inspirational quotes that she pinned in her new 'office' area to keep her motivated too. She was physically and mentally more confident already and ready to try and work from home again. It was exciting!!

So, I left Claire with her schedule, rearranged house and a plan of action. We had agreed to meet a month later to see how she was getting on.

A month went by and we met again. I was a little nervous to say the least. I wanted her to do well with all my heart. I rang the doorbell and Claire answered. Much to my delight she was beaming!! Claire told me how she had started to gain a (not insignificant!!) income from her new business already and had more time to do the things she wanted to do with her family. She was more organised and productive than she had ever been and even said it didn't feel like work.

To say I was chuffed was an understatement. I was so happy for Claire and even a little proud. You see, we had gone through the changes she needed to make together, even moved her furniture together, but Claire had to make the changes herself. She had to put them into practice or she would not be able to work from home with such success. After all, I was not going to be there 24/7!! Now she was more organised and targeted in her approach she was enjoying the freedom she so desired. More importantly, her sofa became a place of lazing about and cuddling on rather than an oversized office chair.
