Taking Care Of Betta Fish - Some Tips And Suggestions You Can Follow
The betta fish is indeed a popular aquarium fish because of its attractive colors
. Aside from this, the betta is also relatively easy to take care, thus appealing for those who want to have an aquarium even if you have less time. However, like any other aquarium fishes, you have to take into consideration some important things in taking care of betta fish to make them healthy in the fish tank.
Also called Siamese fighting fish, this type of fish however can only live up to two to three years. It is important to consider also that if you are interested in getting a betta for your aquarium, you have to learn everything about this fish, from food to water needs as well as their behavior. Here are some tips to help you in taking care of betta fish and making them a healthy part of your aquarium.
- Betta fish thrive in shallow waters in its original habitat thus can survive in a small tank but if you want to make your fish happier, a larger fish tank can help prevent her fins from tearing. A larger fish tank can also make her move freely.
- Betta fish also love warm temperature. Bettas are originally from Thailand (or Siam) and survive in hot and warm waters, thus you have to make sure that you have the right water temperature for your betta. In taking care of betta fish, keep in mind that a temperature below 75 degrees may cause them to be less active. A temperature ranging from 77 to 80 degrees would be fine for your betta.
- Keep in mind not to put two or more male betta fish together. They are not called Siamese fighting fish for nothing. Male bettas are aggressive towards other males and can fight to death. You can add a partition to your tank if you wish to get two or more male bettas. Do not also attempt to put them together with other aggressive types of fishes. Avoid putting in some long finned fishes and those with colorful fins as they can be mistaken to be betta fish and can be attacked by the male bettas.
- For female bettas, you can however put groups of three together. Putting a pair of female betta on your fish tank may end up one being picked by the dominant one. Also provide structures that will allow your female bettas to hide if you are putting several of them in one tank.
- Do not overdecorate your fish tank with structures that can tear the fins of your betta fish. You may have to put in sand and gravel and some floating plants but not bigger structures that can damage their fins.
- Cover your fish tank to prevent them from jumping off. This aquarium fish can jump up to three inches high and can easily get out of the tank if the water level is just below the brim. You can also lower down the water level to 80 percent to avoid them from leaping out of the tank.
These are just some of the tips to help you in taking care of betta fish. If you are interested in bringing home a betta, make sure to learn everything you can about them.
