Tangier: The Gateway To Morocco
Set on a bay that overlooks the Straits of Gibraltar
, Tangier offers great views of the southern coast of Spain, among other special attractions. In this brief guide, we are going to focus on some of the attractions that make Tangier a popular destination for many travelers.
Cape Malabata
You will have a pleasant experience when you visit Cape Malabata in the morning, as it is a promontory that projects into the water towards the East. The pre-dawn sky offers a special appeal, something that is not possible to experience in many cities full of skyscrapers.
In the evening, you may consider Cape Spartel, which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean towards the West.
Asilah-Historic Sites
There are a number of historic sites that have been restored to preserve their heritage. Some of the sites are the Al-Kamra Tower, the Raissouni Palace and the Portuguese fortifications. The town received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1989 and was declared as a National Monument. It is made up of private buildings, public houses and mosques. The owners of the private houses rent them out during the summer season to supplement their income. This also gives you a good opportunity to secure accommodations for your vacation.
Kasbah
Although the Kasbah is located in the town of Medina, it is separated from the rest of the town by its walls. Medina is the old section of the city and is situated on the highest point. Its gate opens to an expansive courtyard that leads to Dar el Makhzem, which used to be a palace of the sultan. Nowadays it houses the Kasbah Museum, which is composed of the Museum of Antiquities and the Museum of Moroccan Art.
While you are in Medina, you should also take the time to visit the Church of the Immaculate Conception, which the Spanish constructed in 1880. The church is no longer in use, but it will help you have more insight into the city's past and see the architecture used.
Craft Center
As the name clearly shows, this is a special place to find different types of craftwork and get something special to take back home.
Grand Socco
This is a great market that used to be quite vibrant in the former years. It is still busy, particularly on Thursdays and Sundays when it is graced by Riffian peasants. The market also acts as a link between the New City and Medina.
Mendoubia Gardens
Besides getting the opportunity to rest under relaxing shades, you will see dragon trees and fig trees that have lived for centuries. You will also find 30 bronze cannons here.
Terrace of the Idle
It will not mean that you are idle if you visit this scenic site. The site offers some breathtaking views that have inspired many artists over the years. You will have some special views of the harbor, Andalusia and Gibraltar, whose waters are blue and green respectively.
There are several other interesting sites in Tangier, among which are a number of museums where you will learn a lot about Tangier.
