Last year my elderly Auntie Jane had a house fire that destroyed not only her home, but her beloved Celtic tapestries collection went up in smoke too. Since then, the house has been completely rebuilt and we have all been able to help replace the antique furnishings, but we were having a hard time finding the Celtic tapestries. So, thanks to the internet, my Sister and I started the search, and there were some interesting finds, to say the least! We then sat Auntie Jane down and showed her what we found, allowing her to make the final choices, of course.
Aunties' most beloved tapestry had been a Celtic Triple Goddess in deep purples. We found an extremely close version of that tapestry, and ordered it immediately to replace the one that had been in her bedroom. We hung this tapestry on a wall hanger on the opposite side of her bed. Once Auntie saw all of her choices, besides the Celtic tapestries, she asked us to look further into different designs for the other rooms of her home. She had us on a roll, finding new tapestries was our goal! We did not know, until we started our search, how many things a person could buy in a tapestry art form and theme. We found cushions, pillows, handbags, table runners and mats, all in beautiful tapestry artwork. So it was on to finding the perfect tapestries for Auntie!
For her library we chose an old world leather tapestry map' to place between her cherry wood bookcases. This tapestry is made of leather and hangs from classic cedar rods, and is regarded as the first modern atlases. The technique used is called pyrographics, and its goal is to give an antique illusion on leather. The effect is amazing next to the antique books and artwork we have gathered over this last year for her library. Just the look we were going for in this unique room of hers!
Aunties' formal dining room gives anyone who sees it, the "wow" factor! My Sister and I found at a local yard sale, an antique seven foot table with seating for ten, along with a hutch to match. After that, we had purchased, two magnificent Claude Monet' art prints that fit the warm and old fashioned room perfectly. Little did we know at the time we purchased the art prints that we could find Claude Monet' artwork in tapestries, so back online we went! Sure enough, we found "The Lilly Pond' in a tapestry, inspired by a Monet' painting from 1899. This tapestry is one hundred percent wool and has a very unique French silk lining for the backing. We also ordered wooden wall rods for hanging the tapestry, along with a tapestry table runner, to complete her room. What an awesome find and purchase. The old world loveliness of this room takes a person back in time, for sure!
So that is my story of tapestries! They are so beautiful and come in many styles, designs, and colors. Our Auntie Jane could not be prouder. She shows her tapestries off to everyone who visits her at her newly rebuilt house. Now she also tells all who visits, about her first online experience. Telling her friends "I guess you CAN teach old dog new tricks!" Happy shopping people!
