Tattoo Removal Methods - What Works And What Doesn't

A lot of people got tattoos without fully thinking through what they were doing before the artist started inking the design

. Now they want those tattoos removed. Maybe you fall into that category.

There are a lot of tattoo removal methods. Some work better than others. Some don't work. If you use the same "what the hell, let's go for it" approach for getting your tattoo removed as you did when you got the tattoo in the first place, the only thing that will be removed is cash from your wallet and you'll just end up frustrated and pissed off in the bargain.

It only took one crazy evening to get that tattoo but it's going to take a lot longer than that to get rid of it. If you read or hear any claims to remove your tattoo in one easy treatment, don't believe them. No matter how enticing the pitch, the truth is, no matter what method you choose, it will take multiple treatments and some period of time to remove the tattoo.

Here's some more bad news. No matter what method you choose, your tattoo may not be completely removed. A lot depends on where on your body the tattoo is, your skin type, the complexity and size of the tattoo, the color if inks used, and how deep the tattoo is.

With that said, the removal method that has the best success rate is laser tattoo removal. It takes multiple treatments - sometimes ten or more - to remove the tattoo, it can be painful, you have to wait six weeks between treatments, and it's expensive.

At the other end of the scale, expense- and success-wise, are tattoo removal creams and gels. They can take many months of use to fade the tattoo, so expenses can mount up as you use the creams, but it's still less expensive than laser. In the end, your tattoo may not fade very much and you may have to resort to other methods for better results.

Whatever tattoo removal methods you decide on, understand that it won't be as easy getting the tattoo removed as it was getting it put on. That said, it will still probably be worth the effort to see it gone.
