Tea tree oil for perioral dermatitis is one of the most effective ways to treat this painful and embarrassing condition

. This is an affliction related to acne that effects the area around the mouth or eyes. The condition usually presents with red papules that may burn, or in some cases, itch.

Women and children are most often effected by this condition. Though no definitive cause can be determined, it is believed to be a reaction to facial applications containing substances that hold moisture, like petroleum jelly. In children this could be the result of sunscreen with a similar base.

Fluoride toothpaste or other substances containing fluoride may also be the cause. Irritation from wind or sunlight may irritate the condition as well. Certain species of bacteria and fungi have also been found in the rash. As well, hormonal changes brought on by oral contraceptives may be the cause.

The oil of the melaleuca alternifolia plant (tea tree oil) is known to be antimicrobial. Traditionally employed by the Bundjalung people of Australia against many kinds of ailments, this essential oil has many knows medicinal applications. They, for example, used t crush the leaves to treat coughs and colds. Recognizing its effect against infection, they also use it to treat wounds.

Tea tree oil has been known as an antimicrobial to the West since the 1920's. Commercial production increased until demand was replaced by effective artificial antibiotics. A waning in the popularity of natural products after WWII, caused production to drop off until the 1970's when a renaissance in homeopathy took place.

Recent scientific studies of melaleuca oil have shown that the active ingredient terpinen-4-ol is at least as effective as benzoyl peroxide against acne. Studies have also shown that it is very effective for some staph infections. For certain kinds of methicillin-resistant staph infections it may even be more effective than pharmaceutical grade antibiotics.

This essential oil can also be an irritant to the skin in its concentrated form. It is recommended to use a topical product containing 5% tea tree oil for the treatment of skin conditions of the face. Tee tree oil can be mixed with grape seed, or other oil to dilute it's potency.

The oil of the melaleuca alternifolia plant is a wonderfully useful antiseptic. It will kill bacteria and fungi on contact. It may be a better alternative than some pharmaceutical products for certain kinds of infections. In particular it has a great effect on perioral dermatitis. It should always be considered, however, that if the condition is persistent or if it spreads or gets worse, that a doctor should be consulted.
