Team Building - 5 Strategies To Be Avoided
Most people love team building tips because they seem to be able to get their ideas from these, while some are useful, others may be more on the useless side. Good team building tips can actually help to bring about great results when applied properly. However if you want good results, then simply knowing what to do isn't enough, you also need to have a good idea about what not to do. Yes, if you are aware of the common pitfalls in team building then you will be sure to avoid these, thus increasing the chances of your team building success. Here are the 5 strategies which should be avoided at all cost when you are engaged in the process of team building:1. Choosing away day events in which only the winners would be rewarded - Events in which winners are rewarded generously tend to attract a lot of participants because they would be eager to win the prize. However somehow this does not apply to team building away day events. You should keep in mind that there would be a lot of losers, who would feel that these events are a waste of time, which is true.2. Incorporate the element of competition in order to improve the performance of the employees - There are many ways to increase an employee's performance, and competition certainly isn't one of them. In fact it is a common misconception that competition is likely to hone the skills of employees or improve their performance levels. The truth is that it doesn't, in fact it makes the tasks even more difficult for them. Also when people concentrate on winning solely, they tend to forget the more essential things.3. Teach the members better through competition - When it comes to building a better team, there are two approaches which are commonly followed: the cooperative approach and the competitive approach. If you choose to go with the first approach, then you have chosen right because this approach is known to work better than the other. Cooperation can be stimulating, and competition can be too, but in a bad way. When the members know that they aren't alone and that they can rely on one another, then the environment would be relaxed and stress-free and everyone would be willing to contribute their own bit and learn from others' contribution as well.4. Bring out the best in the members by using competition - By now you must already be aware that competition is no good when it comes to team building, so you shouldn't rely on it to bring out the best in the team members because it can easily be misinterpreted as aggression. And aggression certainly does not build a good team.5. Include a lot of competitive events in an away day - This is the worst mistake that one can make. Competitive events can make the winners feel great and the losers miserable. Making a majority of the team, i.e. the losers feel miserable about themselves isn't going to help in team building.
