Teams With The Best Chance Of Playing In The 2011 Rose Bowl

With the Rose Bowl less than two months away, fans of the Pac-10 and Big-10 conferences watch with eager anticipation every Saturday. Each game is critical. Just one loss this late in the season could be the difference between the Rose Bowl and a non-BCS bowl game. Each conference has its own contenders. Who will be playing in California this January? Which fans should be solidifying their travel plans and which should only put down a deposit on a Rose Bowl Travel Package?

Let's start with the Pac-10 conference. There are only two teams in consideration for Rose Bowl eligibility this year, Oregon and Stanford. The Oregon Ducks are undefeated this year, sporting a perfect 10-0 record. Although they are technically the favorite for the Rose Bowl this year, if they win out, the Oregon Ducks will be playing in the BCS championship game. If Oregon is entitled to play in the BCS National Championship game, Stanford would get automatic entry into the Rose Bowl.

Stanford is currently second in the Pac-10, with a 10-1 record. Their only loss was to Oregon on the road. They are undefeated at 2-0 against top 25 opponents. Stanford has the edge over Oregon in making the Rose Bowl out of the simple fact that Oregon would have to lose. You can bet that with Oregon's easy schedule the rest of the year, Stanford will be playing in the Rose Bowl this year.

The Big-10 conference is much more interesting. There are currently three teams that have a shot to make the Rose Bowl. Michigan State, Ohio State, and Wisconsin all possess an overall record of 10-1 with an in conference record of 6-1. Ohio state is no stranger to the Rose bowl, as usually it's Ohio State or Michigan representing the Big-10. Michigan State's only loss of the year was to #18 Iowa. They beat Wisconsin, giving the Badgers their only loss of the year. Ohio State's only loss of the year was to Wisconsin. As you can see, with all three teams beating each other and having only one loss, it will be extremely difficult to determine which team will represent the Big-10 in this year's Rose Bowl game.

The way these three teams can seperate themselves is with an impressive win in the last game of the season. Obviously if one of the team loses, they will be out of contention for the Rose Bowl. Michigan State plays the hardest team of the three in Penn State; However, Wisconsin is the highest ranked team at #7 followed by Ohio State at #8. Michigan State is currently ranked #10 in the nation. Since Wisconsin is the highest ranked of the three and beat Ohio State, they should represent the Big-10 in the Rose Bowl with a win over Northwestern on Saturday. If Wisconsin struggles or Ohio State/Michigan State has an impressive win, you could see any of these three teams in the Rose Bowl.
