Technology and Technological Know-how: A Prerequisite for Rapid Development

Development is a vast and highly contested field

. It is all encompassing: politically, economically, socially, and culturally. Not only does it require the elimination of the major sources of conflict: inequality, poor economic development and opportunities, discrimination and social deprivation; but also requires advanced technologies and technological know-how to make ends meet.

One of the primary reasons for the underdevelopment of most African countries is the lack of and inadequate technology to facilitate rapid development. Most of the countries of Africa possess a high deposit of natural resources. However, the technologies to harness these natural resources, and to generate more employment opportunities, are not available in the countries. Cash crops, such as cocoa and rubber, are highly cultivated in most parts of Africa; but the technologies to turn these crops into finished products for consumption and commercial purposes are not available in some of the nations of Africa. Rather than adopting some technologies from the industrialized and developed countries, most African countries do prefer to export their raw materials to be finished in the developed countries, and to import the already made or finished products.

Moreover, technological know-how is missing, and a lot of grains are cultivated with crude implements and technologies. Yet, the continent imports babies' food, such as cereals, milk and beverages, which would have been profitable by contributing to the economic growth of the continent, had the products been produced in the continent. Technology is very important for growth and development. Africa and other less developed countries cannot experience rapid economic growth and development without prioritizing the adoption and usage of advanced technologies.
