Teeth Implants: Advantages Over Regular Dentures

Teeth implants are used to restore missing tooth by placing a metal screw into the bone and putting a crown in top of it

. Conventional implant is done by placing screw in the jaw and attach to a post with porcelain to replace the tooth.

Teeth are lost due to tooth decay, root canal failure, gum disease (periodontitis), trauma to the mouth, Excessive wear and tear, congenital defects.

Some people do not have sufficient bone in the jaw to screw a normal implant because of erosion by gum disease. The only alternative is to use dentures or have a bone graft in the jaw for which the implant can be secured. This is a painful procedure and takes a long time to complete.

People who have lost their teeth became too conscious to smile or talk and develop lack of self-esteem. In addition chewing irregularities caused by tooth loss can have a negative effect on eating habits and may lead to secondary health problems like malnutrition.

Dentures are made of acrylic and plastic which fit over the gum. The disadvantage of dentures is that many are ill-fitting and can move around the mouth causing sores and might fall out in a long run. In addition without the tooth in the bone will result to sunken cheeks.

Types of implants that are used today:

Endosteal (in the bone) is a commonly used type of implant. The various types include screws, cylinders or blazed surgically placed into the jawbone. Each implant holds one or more prosthetic teeth. This is generally used as an alternative for patients with bridges or removable dentures.

Subperiosteal (on the bone) is placed on top of the jaw with the metal framework post protruding through the gum to hold the prosthesis. These implants are used for patients who are unable to wear conventional dentures and who have minimal bone height.

Dental Implants have advantages over Dentures or a bridge:

1. Esthetic Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth, because it is integrated into the structure of your bone, they also prevent the bone loss and gum recession that accompany bridgework and dentures. No one will know you have a tooth replacement.

2. Tooth saving dental implants do not give up the quality of the adjacent teeth like a bridge does because the neighboring teeth are not changed to support the implant. Your teeth are left untouched a significant long term benefit to your oral health.

3. Implant will give you more confidence as it is securely attached to your bones. There are no worries about misplaced dentures and messy pastes and glues.

Patients that are in good health can be a candidate for a dental implant, with an adequate jaw to support the implant and have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease.
