Telemarketing Enemy Gathers Numbers
The prime hurdle for the telemarketing sector is the Do Not Call (DNC) list
. Call center agents have to keep themselves away from calling just about everybody to sell their product/service. They have to pay a grudging respect to the DNC list because violations of the same will land them in legal hassles. Clients will be dragged into the ring and the call center will be tainted. Projects will bypass them to probably less-deserving BPO providers. That is why the telemarketing services providers are making themselves aware of the DNC lists and sticking to the rules of the game. However, the growing number of DNC registrations is a cause of concern for the industry.
Very recently the Federal Commission of USA announced that the number has proliferated to 200 million! In another perspective, there are 200 million consumers in the USA that cannot be contacted for telemarketing purposes. They have arranged for their privacy to be protected from call center agents knocking on their phones. While from a moral perspective, it is nice to note that the telecommunication authority is providing the citizens with privacy and protection against unsolicited calls. But if you take it from a business perspective, the telemarketing services could have added so much revenue to the national coffers if they were allowed to tap these 200 million prospective consumers. The representatives of the call centers are campaigning hard for the authorities to see this cold business logic.
While I am not advocating that DNC lists should be revoked, being too strict with it will only chop off the knees of the telemarketing business. That would mean that there is less money added to the national gross domestic product (GDP). Less money would mean that our economy will remain stuck in the doldrums. Call centers have always contributed generously to the economy. If their business dries up, it will leave very little space for the call center agents to optimize their efforts for greater income. Moreover, the paucity of projects will make things rough and lead to layoffs and unemployment. The business process outsourcing industry also happens to be a major provider of jobs to millions of people across the country. Strangling such a profitable industry for the privacy of callers may be too high a price to pay for.
The argument doesn't end there. The call centers have to be careful about their telemarketing services, too. If they push unwilling customers too much, they will have no choice to register with the DNC. An ideal way would be to try
lead generation without an active use of telephones. Relying on other methods will take the heat off telemarketing and DNC. With lesser number of complaints, the authorities will promote the DNC less fiercely. It may sound fanciful but that is the best chance of the call center industry. Should things spiral out of control, the DNC list will keep getting registrations and the legal cases will pile up as well. It will be a lose-lose situation for the business process outsourcing industry.
