Telephone Headsets, Headset Telephones, Phone Headsets, Headset Phones
We know it's a bit confusing that when you turn a lot of our product names around they become a different, separate product
. We sell telephone headsets but we also sell headset telephones. They are not the same thing. They are two distinctly different products. We also sell phone headsets, which are the same thing as telephone headsets, just abbreviated. We also sell headset phones, which are the same thing as headset telephones, again simply abbreviated. However, headset phones are quite different from phone headsets, as we have explained in these pages before. We make these distinctions as a way of producing better communications between ourselves and our customers.
Very often we have a client call us asking for a phone headset. Naturally, we ask what features he needs and within a few moments we have to explain to him that what he really wants is a "headset phone." Many times the customer used to respond, "isn't that what I just asked for?"
Over time we have learned to answer that particular question quite carefully. What we now say in answer to that question goes something like this: "Yes sir, you asked for a phone headset. I'm trying to explain there is a certain type of phone headset called the headset phone, which I believe is the specific product you are actually requesting."
Even with this fairly careful phrasing, we still get a certain amount of people who think we are messing with them or just stupid. Happily though it is much better than the first couple of times we answered the question without thinking the answer through. One potential customer said, "I need a phone headset." I asked what kind of features he needs and based on his description said, "based on what you are telling me you probably need a headset phone rather than a phone headset."
"You must need a hearing aid," he said, hanging up the phone. As a result of that and a couple other conversations where communication didn't really happen, I adopted the more careful approach I currently use.
I actually feel sorry for those guys out there selling Ricoh copiers here in the US. It has to be really disconcerting to have a new client walk into your Ricoh Copier store and say, "I need a new Xerox machine."
I just think it would be very difficult not to answer, "then you might want to visit a Xerox store, you moron, if you open your eyes you will see, we only sell RICOH Copiers." In fact, it might be fun to go into a Xerox store and tell the clerk you need a new Ricoh. Just be sure to wear your Nikes so you can make a quick exit or you might need a Kleenex for your bloody nose.
