Telling Signs of Sleep Apnea in Children

Sleep apnea is a condition that spares no one

, and children allegedly suffer a great deal more of it than adults. Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome is taken to be the cause of behavioural problems and lack of attention during the day among children. If you think that sleep apnea in children is much similar with that in adults, you are mistaken, and it is a common idea among experts that the sleeping condition is harder to notice and diagnose among the younger inhabitants of the planet.

However, there are symptoms of apnea that are quite telling, even if the ones who are unfortunately exhibiting them are children. If you see some of these signs, please seek professional help.

Take note that snoring is common with children, and about 10 to 20 percent of that generation snores. Hence, if you hear that your child snores, it does not mean that sleep apnea has caught up with him. A more accurate symptom is mouth breathing. People are supposed to breathe through the nose, and those who tend to do so through the mouth simply encounter some difficulty with nose breathing. If your child finds it easier to breathe through the mouth, it is an indication that nasal air passage is hindered or blocked. Another symptom is the tonsils and adenoids that are unusually large. Again, this indicates difficulty in breathing that causes the adenoids and tonsils to grow out of the usual proportion.

Moreover, sleep apnea in children is marked by too much daytime sleepiness. Why? Because they do not get enough sleep at night, or their sleep is bothered, and then tend to supply the lack during the day. In addition to that, children suffering from the sleeping disorder have trouble focusing and paying attention, something that can be easily noticed at school. They tend to be hyperactive and cranky, and with difficulty dealing with their peers.

Needless to say, sleep apnea is a dangerous condition, and it has proven to be fatal among both adults and children. An important difference is that sleep apnea in children demands more attention to details since it is harder to detect than among adults.
