Termite control is a very important aspect of home ownership

. If not properly treated, these insects are quite capable of eating through all type of woods, resulting in the deterioration of the structure and security of your home. In this article we will outline several ways in which a homeowner can address an infestation.

Termiticide

One of the oldest and fastest means for killing these pests in liquids. Liquid control methods serve as a defensive barrier within the home, using a variety of chemicals to prevent pests from entering and nesting in the home.

In the majority of cases, an exterminator should be consulted in order to apply the termiticide, to spray all over both the interior and exterior of the homestead. One issue this method poses is that the chemicals that are sprayed tend to remain in the soil and around the home for an extended period of time afterwards. Repellent and non-repellent are available types. A repellent works to create an effective barrier where as non-repellent simply kills the pest.

Bait Traps

This method offers a more environmentally friendly solution than that of liquid type. A bait trap works by relying on the idea of an individual insect heading to the bait and returning to the colony to distribute the substance and killing off the remaining colony. Baits come in the form of either food or liquid as preferred by the homeowner.

Generally, a trap will be placed in various areas around the home. In some cases, the traps may not even include chemicals. These particular traps are used as a type of monitoring system to allow the homeowner to know whether termites have been in the area and in contract with the bait. If the results provide positive results, the trap will be switched out for the poison one.

Borate

Borate is a common chemical used as a means to exterminate termites. This method is generally quite effective, but only if applied directly to the wood during the construction period. Unfortunately, this treatment option is not nearly as effective when used after the home has already been built. Though, borate can still be applied to areas where the wood remains exposed. The borate prohibits the digestion process, and ultimately kills the coloby one by one.

Fumigation

This form of treatment is only effective in cases where drywood termites are involved. Otherwise, this option should be reserved for extreme cases only. In this instance, a large tarp will cover the entire home and poisonous gases will fill the air inside, thus killing every living being remaining within the home.
