Test drives and EPA ratings mean the Leaf is officially on the market
Dealers across the country specializing in Nissan, East Providence dealers included, have reason to rejoice this holiday season. After much anticipation, a prolonged waiting period and uncertainty about the possibilities for the finished product, Nissan is finally ready to release the Leaf. Along with the introduction of the first ever all-electric vehicle (EV) to the mass car-market, come answers to all the questions regarding the new technology. Furthermore, Nissan's East Providence dealerships, despite being prepared for some promises about the electric vehicle to have been broken, are all smiles as the Leaf is living up to everything it ever claimed to be.
First off, Nissan promised the Leaf to be an environmentally friendly vehicle with zero emissions, while still be efficient. Thanks to recent research and testing done by the Environmental Protection Agency, it has been proven that Nissan lived up to this promise. The EPA rated the Nissan Leaf to be equivalent to earning a fuel efficiency of 99 miles-per-gallon. That kind of efficiency is greater than anyone could have imagined, considering the previously most efficient vehicle on the market, the Toyota Prius, barely earns half of that.
The EPA came up with the rating of 99 miles-per-gallon by averaging the expected earnings by the Leaf of 92 miles-per-gallon during city driving and 106 miles-per-gallon during highway driving. These averages were found based on several calculations by the EPA. EPA officials determined that one gallon of gas is equivalent to 33.7 kilowatt hours of electricity, the form of energy responsible for running the Leaf. A full charge on the Nissan Leaf's battery, which takes an average of seven hours on a 240-volt outlet when the battery is totally depleted, offers 34 kilowatt hours of electricity and a range of 100 miles.
Understanding that new technology, especially new technology in automobiles, can be a scary thing for consumers, Nissan has planned a public test-drive tour with the electric vehicle. The tour began this past October in Santa Monica, California. The rest of California saw lots of the Leaf through November and the beginning of December has taken the Leaf into Seattle. From here, the Leaf will travel into Canada for a stop in Vancouver and then head south into Arizona and Las Vegas to wrap up the year.
Early 2011 will find the Leaf travelling east across the United States, stopping in Detroit, Tennessee, North Carolina and Washington, D.C., before wrapping up in Orlando and Houston. Although the first model of the Leaf will only be released in five states (and these first models have already been spoken for), Nissan is hoping to expand knowledge and desire for the EV through the tour so the demand for the 2012 model is high. To test drive a Nissan vehicle currently available for purchase, visit a local Warwick used car lot. Although no vehicle on any Warwick used car lot will be an electric vehicle, Nissan's gas-powered models are still extremely efficient and affordable to drive. Nissan recognizes that although electric vehicles are the cars of the future, this technology is not for all current car drivers and thus, the company will continue to produce high quality gas-powered vehicles also.
