Carla Harris, Deputy Manager, Woodlands Nursery/ Elmscot Ltd, Cheshire

The treasure basket was well resourced with a variety of both natural and everyday objects for the babies to explore. This variety is vital for the babies so that their experience is well rounded, allowing for learning through all the six areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework.

The various objects allowed for exploration by the babies nurturing their natural curiosity, prompting further investigation over a sustained period of time, which reflected their high interest. Some children found one particular object to be of particular fascination whilst others preferred to explore all the items. The high number and range of objects facilitated this without conflict arising between the babies.

We found the drawstring bag particularly useful for storage and when taking the treasure basket outdoors.

Zoe Lever, Assistant Deputy Manager, Old Crofts Bank Private Day Nursery, Urmston

We trialled the Treasure Basket with two age groups, one group of 3-4 year olds and one group of 18mnth-2yr olds.

With the older playgroup we noticed that they were more fascinated with more complex objects (i.e. the household items), in particular the lock and keys, we couldn't get them away from them; they were really keen on playing with these items and exploring their usage. I liked how the introduction of these items (especially the keys) helps to develop fine-motor skills as the way you would hold a pencil is similar to how you would work a key.

The bubble wrap was also well received with the children; they immensely enjoyed the textural element of this and how they could make it pop.

The younger group loved the natural materials and I liked the idea of the play mat function, which comes in handy. I especially liked the orange and lime objects, I hadn't seen this is in a treasure basket before and I wouldn't have thought about adding them in to our own. They allowed the older children to smell as well as touch and feel whereas the younger group liked the natural, heuristic aspect of these objects and explored them by touching. I liked how the natural objects in this basket were ideal for small hands and that they could pick them up easily and weren't too big for them.

I like how this Treasure Basket can be used with different age groups as you don't often find that with others on the market; because you can use this with different age groups you can achieve different learning objectives in a way that suits their development and ability. For example with the older age group I would use the Treasure Basket for more activity-based learning, i.e. I would use the contents of the basket and cover them with a cloth, then I would take one out from underneath the cloth and then ask the children to tell me which item I had removed. The Treasure Basket is also good with this age group to encourage discussions.

With the younger age group I would use the Treasure Basket on a regular basis for multi-sensory play.

I think the Treasure Basket is a good resource to use on a variety of children from different age groups as each age group will get different experiences from the basket. I like the heuristic and multi-sensory aspect of this resource as it is a key part to learning and development and I like how we can introduce different types of activities for the older children.
