Testimonials on Nutrition Activity Mat

Sarah Gallacher, KS1 Teacher, Bentley High Street Primary School, Doncaster

This carpet is extremely good value for money due to its many uses in the primary and early years classroom. Healthy eating is a topic that is covered in several year groups and this provides an opportunity for a unique and creative way of teaching children about it. The activity mats that come with the carpet are a child friendly resource, which is motivating for children as they are keen to move around the mat to put them in place.

In this particular instance we used the carpet and activity mats with a small group of children to prompt discussion about which foods are healthy, however they were also be used in other lessons such as Science to teach about the health properties of certain foods. Children put the small happy' mat on healthy foods and the sad' mat on unhealthy foods. The small mats that represent lots' and

some' allowed children to develop their understanding of which foods we can eat in moderation and which foods we can eat as much as we like.

The happy' and sad' mats have lots of uses as a standalone resource, for example whey would be good when talking about feelings in PSHE. Children can choose a mat to express how they feel, perhaps in a circle time and then discuss this.

As well as being used as a resource for direct teaching we found that the mat can also be left out as an attractive feature in the classroom and children will often sit on the mat and talk about the healthy foods amongst themselves a great example of independent learning, which is so important. We have also used the carpet as part of a role play area with a healthy-living theme.

The mat is an activity that can be left out rather than having to be set up so it saves time in the busy classroom, making it great for teachers. Children also love it as it is colourful and appealing and brightens up a classroom and provides them with a new area to play or work in. At its very reasonable price it is a great resource to have in both an early years setting or in any Primary classroom.

The Heys Primary School, Ashton, Tameside

Although there are some resources available to embed the Government's drive towards healthy lifestyle choices around food, this carpet was extremely useful in terms of its immediate appeal and accessibility for the children. The size of the carpet meant that all of the children could have a good wander round and look at it before any actual formal teaching took place this was really useful in

evaluating what the children already knew about healthy eating (McDonalds chips were frighteningly familiar!). In a classroom context, the carpet makes a cosy, friendly and appealing addition to any group activities.

The Nutrition Activity Mat was very appealing in terms of colour and content and was extremely tough and hardwearing. The Reception /Year One children took part in a range of activities placing the mats on foods they could eat lots of, a little of, sometimes and often. We used it to identify key healthy lifestyle messages five a day, teeth and bones (milk) and so on. It was nice to see a

product showing a range of foods rather than just healthier alternatives, so that the reasons for including them in your diet or not could be discussed. Activities are only really limited by imagination; if this carpet was in an accessible area of your classroom then many other ideas would present themselves as the nature of the carpet allows children to be as imaginative as they like!

There are also cross-curricular links particularly with science, literacy (speaking and listening) and many others.

The portability of this product is also a bonus because we may decide to use the carpet elsewhere depending on our lesson objectives as it allows us to transfer it to different environments such as the PE Hall, any classroom and even outside! A member of staff even used it in our community cooking area to talk with the children about healthy choices whilst their food was baking!
