Testing And Caring For Your Hearing Aid

If you want to ensure that you have very little problems from your hearing aid and

that it lasts to or beyond its expected life expectancy, you need to learn how to care for your device. Since this powerful instrument enables you to hear, communicate and continue to participate in your daily activities, you want to make sure that it is functioning at its best. If you inspect and care for your listening device on a daily basis, you will be able to prevent it from malfunctioning.

Don't sleep with your hearing aid in your ear. Each and every night before you go to sleep, make it a habit to remove the device from your ear. Clean the molding so that there isn't any residual ear wax on it. If you get in the habit of doing this on a nightly basis, you can prevent the tubing from becoming clogged up and interfering with the sound quality of your device. You may want to invest in a special cleanser you can get from your audiology center to help aid you in this task.

Visually inspect the outside of your hearing aid for any damage to the surface. Any cracks, tears and holes can impact how well your device works. If you notice any loos settings or components, you need to take your device in for service. In some cases your audiologist may be able to fix it or it may be time for a replacement. Only your audiologist will be able to determine method of action is appropriate.

If you don't have time to do this on a daily basis, at least do it on a weekly one. Remove your battery and use a battery tester to check how much power it has. The chances of your hearing aid malfunctioning increases when it has a low battery. If your battery connections are dirty, there is battery leakage or corrosion, your device is more likely to stop working properly as well. Some signs that your battery contacts need to be cleaned are poor sound amplification and a whooshing sound. If you find that your contacts have been compromised, you can easily remedy the situation yourself. Take a cotton swap that has been dipped in rubbing alcohol and swipe the contacts and battery compartment. Let the contacts and compartment dry for at least 24 hours at room temperature. If your hearing aid is still producing poor quality sounds, you should take your device in to be serviced.

Before you use your listening device, make sure you test it before each and every use. Use a stethoscope to help you calibrate your device. Make sure that the frequencies are being detected properly by having someone speak in a normal speech pattern for a few moments. You will know if your device is working fine if you don't have any problems hearing any sounds during your tests. The more you test your device, the better and more capable you will become to troubleshooting any potential problems you may have. Don't forget to take your device in for service at least every three months.
