Texting While Driving and the Risks of Hitting Traffic Cones

Texting while driving has become a very popular, yet still very dangerous, amongst motorists and unfortunately it does not look like it will be ending any time soon. Texting and driving has claimed the lives of many drivers, a percentage of them being new drivers.

Those who text and drive may be able to see other vehicles around them, but may fail to see the smaller distractions such as traffic cones. You have probably seen a traffic cone in your life while driving or even walking. The bright orange safety precautions come in a variety of sizes, the larger ones being reserved for highway use. The cones are also wrapped in a reflective sleeve so drivers can see them at night. But if a driver is texting while operating their vehicle there is a good chance that they won't see the cone regardless of the color and bright tape and possibly run it over.

While texting and driving motorists are most likely attempting to pay attention to what is in directly in front of them and not what is on the median of the road just waiting to be hit by the unknowing driver. And while some may think that hitting a traffic cone isn't that big of a deal it could turn into a very expensive accident quickly.

If a driver runs over a traffic cone at a highway speed the cone could severely damage the undercarriage of the car. This is especially true of compact cars or other vehicles that sit low to the ground. Running over a traffic cone could also cause the cone to hit other vehicles traveling near it, which could potentially lead to accidents. While running over a traffic cone is far from the worst of the tragedies that can result from texting and driving it should be avoided at all costs.

So next time you are driving be aware of the traffic cones that are around you. If you notice someone else preparing to collide with a cone try to slow down to avoid any incidents. And if it is urgent that you send a text message while driving officials advise pulling over to send the message or using a hands-free device to complete a call instead.
