The 13 Circuits Of The 2010 World Superbike Championship
The World Superbike Championship, known more commonly as the SBK
, is into its 23rd year in 2010 and is disputed to be bigger than it ever has been.
Backed by several different bike insurance companies over the past two decades, whilst the provisional circuit listing was released on 9 October 2009 by the FIM, there were several changes made between then and the five months leading up to the start of the championship. For instance, race 7 will take place on a Monday, the first time in the history of the SBK and race 10 at Silverstone replaces the famous Donnington Park circuit, primarily because the owner of the circuit, Donnington Ventures Leisure Ltd, succumbed to financial struggles and went into administration, as reported by GrandPrix.com on 18 November 2009.
Race 1, Phillip Island, Australia.Opening the tournament on 28 February, the Phillip Island track is 4.445 kilometres long and is an asphalt surface.Race 1 was won by Brit Leon Haslam, with the Spaniard Carlos Checa winning Race 2.
Race 2, Portimao, Portugal.Scheduled to take place on 28 March, Portimao is longer than Phillip Island, standing at 4.692 kilometres in length and also has more turns, with 18 compared to 12 on the Australian track.
Race 3, Valencia, Spain.11 April sees the riders of the SBK head to the Valencia track, which is the shortest of the circuits so far at 4.051 kilometres.
Race 4, Assen, Netherlands.14 days later and the riders move to one of the most famous bike racing circuits, featuring a total of 17 individual turns over 4.555 kilometres.
Race 5, Monza, Italy. The first of 3 races in May, this one takes place on the 9th and although it only features 10 turns, it covers 5.793 kilometres of track, making it the longest circuit of the season so far and is by far one of the most coveted to win on.
Race 6, Kyalami, South Africa. One week after Monza, the South African track hosts the 6th race of the championship.A track that is 4.2 kilometres long with 10 turns, the circuit was used regularly from 1998 to 2002 and returned as a track once again for the 2009 season.
Race 7, Miller Motorsports Park, USA.The only race to take place on a Monday (May 31st), Miller Motorsports Park has a staggering 23 turns over a track that is longer than any so far at 7.220 kilometres.
Race 8, Misano, San Marino.Almost a month later on June 27, the SBK is taken to San Marino, which features 11 turns over 4.064 kilometres.
Race 9, Brno, Czech Republic.Due to the amount of turns (13) that are apparent on this circuit and the way that they are laid out, it has become a popular track as it allows for overtaking (or undertaking) to be possible on every corner. The SBK riders are scheduled to be on the Brno on 11 July.
Race 10, Silverstone, Great Britain. The British Grand Prix has taken place at Silverstone since 1948 and whilst this is what it is most popular for, it has been host to the SBK on numerous occasions, with 1 August being the next time the event is held at the circuit. It has 17 corners over 5.141 kilometres of track.
Race 11, Nurburgring, Germany.By far one of the most popular circuits in the world, the World Superbike Championship heads to this 5.148 kilometre track with 16 turns on 5 September.
Race 12, Imola, Italy. The penultimate leg of the championship is on the course that was home to the famous Edwards vs. Bayliss final race in the 2002 season.17 turns are on the 4.909 kilometre track, which the SBK reaches on 26 September.
Race 13, Magny-Cours, France. The final race is hosted by the 17 turn Magny-Cours track.Stretching for 4.411 kilometres, the track sees the last race on the SBK 2010 calendar take place on 3 October.
