We've all received promotional text messages offering us a discount pizza

, or a free cinema ticket at some point or another, and call me naive, but I had visions of someone sitting in a corner of an office dutifully texting away on a company phone to ensure that we all received our timely deals. Well, suffice to say, it turn out that I was wrong and what these companies actually do is text messaging online. The benefit of using an email to text service is that you can also target your customers via an email address at the same time as sending them a promotional text. Whilst this is great for companies that deliver pizza, it did make me wonder what else this specialist service could be used for.

I initially thought of spy activities, and having affairs, but really, there could be far more fun to be had than that. Admittedly just about everyone nowadays has a Twitter account, but imagine being able to use text messaging online to let all your friends know how your day is going, what you are currently eating, and just how happy you are that you watched back to back Gavin and Stacy all day long. These friends might have missed your latest Tweet, or indeed Facebook update, so a round robin text is just what they need to fill in the gap.

Sure, it is possible to write a text on your phone and send it to all the people in your address book, but a keyboard offers much faster typing, and you can make the messages the size of an essay just for a laugh. Alternatively, if you are in a more sinister mood, use text messaging online for propaganda purposes, creating false news feeds, or just generally playing pranks on your mates. Text messaging online can in fact be for far more useful purposes though, and it is becoming an increasingly popular tool being used by businesses, and not just to promote products to potential customers.

Text messaging online can be used by a company to keep their staff informed of what's happening, especially if they are mobile, or working off site. The service can inform them of new appointments that have been booked, traffic updates and customer feedback. This service is also used by roadside rescue services to keep the stranded person informed about the estimated time of arrival of the recovery truck. As with so many of these applications, there is a serious side to its use, but it is good to dream a little about the sort of fun that could be had with access to such a service.
