The Advantages Of Using Ethernet Over Copper

The principle behind Ethernet technology is the ability to be able to transfer data packets between points on a network

. Due to the technological progress in this area the use of Ethernet over copper (EoC)has become an option to consider.

The business world is always demanding more from the technology it uses. The problem is that small and medium size companies do not want to reinvest heavily in new systems that may become outdated in the near future. They need connections that have a higher-bandwidth so that their network operating speed is faster. This will increase the efficiency of their business. EoC technology could be the solution for these businesses.

The cost of running fiber to the premises of these establishments is too high for them to even consider. This means that they are limited to the same T1/E1- based services that have been using for the past few years. Studies have shown that a very large number of businesses are still connected to the Internet by means of copper wire rather than investing in fiber.

Fortunately, advances in technology can bring new life to the copper wiring you are currently using as your T1 line carrier. It is possible to use the same bundle of twisted pairs together with specially adapted terminal equipment to carry this new and faster service. The speed that can be delivered is dependent on the distance you are away from your nearest Ethernet mainframe. It could be anything between 10 and 50 Mbps.

Operators are now offering their customers this solution to help them achieve the higher speeds that they thought were out of reach. It is achieved by the bonding of between 5 and 8 pairs of copper wire together and using the correct termination equipment. By using a number of bonded pairs if a pair does fail the system will only slow down. It will not fail completely.

These services offer advantages above that of just greater bandwidth. These advantages include very low capital costs, as all that is required is to install the dedicated termination equipment at your business location and switch on the service. You also get the simplicity and ease of use that the Ethernet is known for, and the high reliability that the fault-tolerant bonded pairs have to offer.

Carriers cannot envisage the desire for faster networks at minimum costs falling any time soon. They are seeing this new system as a bridge to better things. They can offer their customers the solution of higher speeds and reliability without the hassle of having to lay new cables.

As the networks speed and reliability improve with EoC then more innovative uses are being found for it. Multiple locations can be reliably monitored from base stations. This fact can be used in surveillance and security facilities. It can also allow for traffic and closed circuit television systems to be monitored with greater effect.

The main problem with using this carrier method is that the building must be sited reasonably close to an Ethernet mainframe to be able to receive a decent service. If you are in an area where this is not possible, you could install an Ethernet over serial connection. This functions in a similar manner, but at slower speeds.
