The Aging Process - Good or Bad?
Anyone over the age of fifty can tell you that getting old is no fun. Your body begins to slow down and you find yourself getting weaker almost by the day. Now of course not every fifty year old will admit this. To everyone else it is obvious that the decline associated with age is beginning to make its presents known. But for those who are going through its first stages, denial is the levee to reality, for as long as it will hold.
They tell themselves they did not get enough sleep last night or begin to give more importance to appointments the next day rather than party the night before. Now of course we can forgive this excursion from reality and have no problem even playing along with people going through this process. After all it is no fun watching your veins spider up and down your arms and legs, and no one enjoys felling charley horse particularly if one can't explain the cause of this discomfort.
But the question here today is not whether or not this is a good thing, there are few who would view the decline of the body as positive, but is the tradeoff worth it? What is the trade off? Well, I can't say what it is invariably, but, for the most part, the tradeoff is wisdom.
I think this would best be illustrated through an analogy of another transition that people must make in their lives and most people seem to do it quite well, namely, the transition from college to responsible adulthood, or in more colloquial terms, from partying to working.
Everyone enjoys college, for some people it is the highlight of their lives. The social seen, the late nights, the camping trips, not to mention the classes and learning, (which does happen at the end of the day) yet when we graduate and have to spend time first looking for a job, then committing to it and doing our time in the rat race, we have to move on. Some start families, some commit to ambitious careers, but partying till six in the morning for three days in a row is not a feasible option. In this case we exchange our "fun" for responsibility, and our short term aims for long term ones. This helps to understand the transition from young adulthood to maturity and eventually old age.
True our bodies by the time we reach fifty are not what they used to be, but that does not make us useless mannequins. Old age is a time to reflect and straighten our hearts and minds. It is a time to look back on our lives and grow and develop from our experiences. It is a time when our minds are free and partially released from the passions.
True it is not fun on a physical level but on a psychological and spiritual level, it is positively liberating.
