The Art Of Racing Horses

Racing horses has been popular since man realized they could harness the power of the horse to rolling carts

. Wherever there were horses, there were people racing horses. It wasnt long before people were taking bets on who would win, lose and if there would be any injuries or fatalities.

One of the best known forms of horse racing was the ancient Roman chariot races. These races were epic races that pitted man, horse and chariot against one another. These races werent just about racing horses; they were about surviving to race again. Many ancient chariots were fitted with long barbed spikes, and spears, and the charioteers were encouraged to use weapons, and other means to win the race. Ancient chariot races were no holds barred events that drew in millions of people every year to the Hippodrome in Rome (hippo being the Latin word for horse).

The movie, Ben Hur, depicts the excitement, danger and greatness of racing horses in ancient Rome but the only things wagered in these races were peoples lives.

The art of wagering and racing horses didnt arrive until the nobility in England harnessed two horses together and raced them on the back roads of their estates. These impromptu races became so popular that people began wagering on which team of horses would win. Eventually, horse races became an actual sport, and many people flocked to them to see, be seen, and make a few extra pounds.

Eventually, the art of racing horses became what it is today. In the US, there are several well known races; The Preakness, the Kentucky Derby, and the Triple Crown to name a few. The popularity of racing horses has spread throughout the classes what was once a sport for the wealthy, everyone of all economic levels are able to place bets and watch the races from anywhere.

With the advancements in internet media outlets, racing horses has gone digital. No matter where you are, you can log into a horse racing website, see results, place bets, see what the track conditions are on your chosen tracks, and calculate the odds all from the comfort of your own home.

Racing horses has come a long way since man invented the wheel, and the horse drawn chariot. Racing horses has evolved from being a simple spectator sport to a form of entertainment that draws in millions of people and dollars a year.
