The Art of Aerial Silks
The Cirque de Soleil obsession has put the acrobatic form ofAerial Silks on the pop culture radar. This cross between ballet and rock climbing has you dangling from a nylon tether at heights from 4 feet to 20 feet in the air! It's a mesmerizing combination of grace, core strength, flexibility, and athleticism and by far, the most exciting thing, both mentally and physically, I have done in a while!
Two long, luminous strands of fabric stretch from the ceiling to the floor. Advanced students fly high in the air, wrapping themselves into intricate knots to create an astounding array of breathtaking poses, drops, and slides. Stretching and twisting into seemingly impossible positions, they then suddenly plunge toward the ground in an exquisitely timed, dizzying, and death-defying roll with the silk curling wildly through the air - all without the use of safety lines. (As I mentioned, those are the advanced students.) Beginners are no different though. During my first class atSky Gym in Atlanta I was suspended upside down, in a cocoon, doing flips and poses and having the time of my life.
Amber Monson, a self-described adrenaline junkie and rock climber from Atlanta, is the owner and instructor ofSky Gym and also a professional performer herself. "I love the mystique of fabric," she says. "I come out and play with the silks on the ground and people think this is just a scarf performance. Then I wrap myself, my feet go off the ground and I go. I build the drama and intensity with teases and surprises."
She performs her routines at music concerts, conventions, fashion shows, sporting events, special events, and nightclub openings. Because of the physical demands, a silks routine rarely lasts more than 15 minutes. A lesson is an hour. And, as a warning, you will be beyond sore and possibly black and blue after, but it's worth it.
VisitSky Gym for more information on times and locations of classes if you are in the Atlanta area. If not, then google Aerial Silks to find a class near you.
