Argumentative term papers are not just about advocating and persuading. They are about taking a stand on a particular issue, a belief, a cause or an idea and defending it against the opposing point of view. Writing an argumentative research paper is however, not an easy task. The writer who's writing an argumentative paper should not just give away or defend his opinions for the sake of defending it; instead he should have the intention of actually winning it. His primary goal should be to convince people to accept his point of view instead of just saying what he/she believes in, as that is not at all the purpose of writing an argumentative essay.

A writer should never chose a topic that would considerably be difficult or maybe impossible to win like, abortion, plastic surgery, gun control or freedom of speech. These topics are not just hard to defend, but are the most common topics as well that professors come through often and have become familiar with, so it's better to avoid any argument on these topics as they have simply lost their appeal. A writer should always write something that spurs the controversy or the debate, if he/she wants to create an impact on the audience listening to it. Sources can however be newspapers, news magazines, news channels on television, or interviewing prominent personalities or political leaders from where you can always get ideas and relevant facts that you may need while the argument is on.

Once the writer has selected the topic, he should start looking for relevant sources. He should look up books for relevant information that relates to his topic, including all the other works that support as well as reject his argument. Generally, the topic for an argumentative research paper is presented in the form of a statement, but the writer may also introduce it as a question if he wants to make it sound more provocative. The supporting evidences should be provided in such a way that it supports or strengthens the position of the writer and deflects any argument that goes against his belief. An excellent argumentative research paper asserts an opinion that is backed up with data that is purely based on facts, statistics, or through relevant articles and books.

While making an argumentative research paper the writer should make it in a way that it can strongly persuade the reader and at the same time, face any possible opposition that may head-on. The benefit that a writer gets for doing an argumentative research paper is not only fulfilling or defending what actually he believes is right, it also gives the writer an opportunity to increase his own knowledge on that belief and he learns the skill of convincing others. By doing enough research, the writer soon finds himself to be an expert on the issue that he has to defend in the paper. This gradually leads to convincing the reader by giving relevant facts that are powerful enough to change the readers mind from something he/she has believed since long.
