The Artists That Influence Artists

There is something very telling about the inspiration that lies behind an artists work

. More often than not we will be shocked to discover where an artist actually finds motivation to create something. Some find it in the calm of nature while others in urban mayhem. But many artists find inspiration through other artists, ones unlike them, who devote their lives to a completely different craft.

Two artists in particular are fashion designers Rick Owens and Ann Demeulemeester, each praised for their eclectic designs that can easily be dubbed gothic couture.

Rick Owens

Owens really made his mark in the fashion industry at the turn of the century when his first ever runway collection blew everyone out of their seats. With dark tints and rich fabrics, Owens managed to create a collection that fused somber with elegance.

But where does one get the inspiration to create a piece of clothing that so gracefully embodies such opposite extreme? When asked about the inspiration behind his 2008 fall collection, Owens admits to his admiration for Gene Simmons attire and for KISS as a whole. [T]here was the 70s, there was couture, and there was KISS.

Owens has also been held in awe by Wagners Ring, a cycle of four grand operas. In its full form, the cycle runs at approximately 15 hours, typically over a four-day performance. Presumably, what draws Owens into Wagners art is the sheer epic-ness of the entire production, as well as the intricate myths that are embedded into the storyline.

Ann Demeulemeester

Owens and Demeulemeester share a passion for dark, gothic-esque couture, they also both find inspiration in music. While Owens was struck by KISS, Demeulemeester has held the music of Patti Smith in esteemed admiration.

But aside from her musical muses, Demeulemeester also leans towards visual artists for creative stimulation. Previously, she worked closely with American pop artist Jim Dine, whose colourful heart diptychs and larger than life sculptures have deemed him one of Americas most celebrated modern artists. Demeulemeester is working on a collection inspired by the work of legendary abstract painter Jackson Pollock, whose painting No. 5, 1948 became the worlds most expensive painting sold at $140 million. With a fondness for Dines use of vibrant colours and Pollocks infamous drip method, one can only imagine what Demeulemeester has in store for us.
