It is actually their diet that makes vegans and people on a strict vegetarian diets more susceptible to B12 deficiency. It is the actually food that vegan's and vegetarian's avoid that puts them at risk because vitamin B12 is mostly found in animal based foods. Foods rich in B12 are red meat such as liver, shellfish milk, cheese, eggs nuts and seeds.
As with any vitamin and nutrient deficiencies there are symptoms to watch out for. These can include low energy and in severe cases chronic fatigue. These symptoms can be associated with a condition called anemia and this happens when the body is not producing enough red blood cells. With fewer red blood cells the body can no longer efficiently pump oxygen through the body and oxygen is essential for energy production.
Other symptoms can include headaches, pale skin, loss of appetite and feeling faint or dizzy. In more serious cases of a deficiency there is a condition called pernicious anemia. This is where the body can no longer produce a protein that is essential for the absorption of B12 into the body. With pernicious anemia a person who even eats a diet with B12 rich foods can still have low levels because the digestive system fails to absorb the nutrients.
In cases where a B12 deficiency is caused by malabsorption a doctor can prescribe B12 vitamin shots. . These are given because the vitamin is injected directly into the body's tissue making far more absorbable
