The Bad Effects Of Smoking
Many people continue to put their health at risk by smoking cigarettes
. Smoking is a nasty and addicting habit that affects not only the people who actually smoke but the ones inhaling the smoke as well (second-hand smokers).
Health Hazard
Yearly, thousands of people around the globe die from various diseases caused by smoking. The lungs are affected when you smoke. The presence of tar is terrible since it coats the lungs. Doctors say that tobacco smoke largely contributes in acquiring not only lung cancer but other types of cancers as well. A smoker who takes in 20 cigarettes per day also takes in about 201 grams of tar in 1 year or about 1 cup.
Carbon monoxide deprives the muscles, brain, and body tissue of the much-needed oxygen. This makes the heart work much harder and in the long run, airways will swell up and will allow less air into the lungs.
The mixture of carbon monoxide and nicotine in a cigarette causes a temporary increase in blood pressure and heart rate thus, causing a strain in the heart and blood vessels. Stroke and heart attack are more likely to happen since the blood flow slows down, causing oxygen not to properly reach the feet and the hands. It is not uncommon for smokers to have their limbs amputated because of this.
Smoking definitely causes illnesses and will eventually kill. Smokers tend to acquire bronchitis, skin problems, tuberculosis, and emphysema. The effects of smoking are not only suffered by the smokers themselves but by the people around them. Not only do people have to bear the annoying smell of the smoke that cigarettes produce but they also worry what the bad effects of smoking can do to their loved ones.
Pregnant women who smoke are putting their unborn child's health at great risk. Cigarette smoking causes premature deliveries, low birth weight, spontaneous abortion, and generally reduces the strength of the immune system.
Minor Effects of Smoking
Cigarette smoking causes bad breath and yellow stains on the teeth. Smokers are also prone to having dry skin and an overall haggard appearance. The unpleasant smell of smoke sticks to fabrics and the smoker's skin which is found to be offensive by some.
Although smoking is known to be the culprit in many diseases, people simply cannot kick the habit. People smoke for various reasons such as addiction, boredom, curiosity or worse, for simply wanting to appear cool and sophisticated.
The sooner smokers decide to quit, the better it will be for the majority, especially for the children who deserve the best possible clean and healthy surroundings that the world can provide.
