The Bakkie Is A Wonderful Thing

The bakkie is a wonderful thing Have you ever stopped and imagined life without bakkies? What else would we use to get rid of our garden refuse? Where would we load the tent and braai for our camping trip? And after a nice relaxing weekend at the dam, what will you do with all the wet clothes and fishing equipment? If you're an adventurous or fun loving person, a bakkie can add a lot of comfort and convenience to your lifestyle!

Apparently the word bakkie was derived from the Dutch word "bak", meaning carrier or tray. The short Dutch form (or slang) was "bakje" and the South African language adopted the word "bakkie" from there. The term originally referred to small open trailers, but was later used for the "bakkie" (the most basic definition is a "small pickup truck") as we know it.

Loading and unloading goods from any vehicle can be a demanding (and sometimes quite a tricky!) job. Therefore some bakkies have a drop-side feature allowing the hinged panel to drop down, easing the workload. This feature is not restricted to bakkies only, but also available on some trailers, trucks and other heavy duty vehicles. The flat tray with its hinged panels rise up on the sides and the rear and the hinged panels can be lowered independently.

Some jobs require a heavy load to be put on board the bakkie, so manufacturers sometimes include an extra feature, allowing the panel to be removed completely in order to carry oversized loads.

Whether the panel is left dropped down or fastened in place, it does not cause a distraction as the rear indicators and brake lights are usually mounted hanging underneath the tray or on a bracket from the rear-most part of the chassis. However, if the panel is left drop down, be sure to take extra precaution to ensure that nothing is dangling off from the side a rope or tie-down that dangles lose is an accident waiting to happen!

The drop-side comes in very handy, especially when having to offload large or bulky items. It is just so much easier to effortlessly slide something off the back of the bakkie, instead of trying to pick it up. Bakkies with this function is functional and versatile, which is in my opinion two of the most important features for any bakkie! It does not matter what the payload or body length of the vehicle in question is, the drop-side design definitely contributes to a practical and convenient work-horse!

Loads can be carried with absolute security if the vehicle is fitted with cam latches, retention rings and any other mountable points. It would not be an ideal situation if you can easily upload your load onto your bakkie.. and then lose it somewhere along the way! Always make double sure that your load is securely fastened as to avoid any incidents along the way.

Even drop-side cribs are available these days, allowing easier access to the baby. It makes you wonder who was first the baby or the bakkie?
