The Bare Truth About Collagen Supplements For the Skin - Do They Really Work? by:Dorothy A. Pela

It is a fact; in this day and age that there is a lot of concern about health and the way we look

, more and more people are turning their attention to collagen supplements. They hope that by ingesting them, they will be able to turn back the clock of time and restore their youthful vigor.

However, is this for real? Are collagen supplements the long sought "fountain of youth"?

After seeing all the advertisements about these supplements which promise you a smooth looking, radiant skin, I was intrigued myself to search for the truth. So, I did a little bit of research which I would like to share with you.

First, let me give you some background on what this much talked about substance actually is.

It is a type of protein that is found in the body of mammals, including humans. Its main function is to connect and support other bodily tissues, such as skin, bone, tendons, muscles and cartilage. Some people refer to it as the "glue" that holds the body together.

Although it is abundant in the whole body (it makes up about 25 percent of the total amount of proteins in our body), collagen is often more discussed in relation to the skin. Working together with two other proteins, elastin and keratin, it provides our skin with strength, flexibility and resilience.

However, as we age, our body's ability to produce this essential protein diminishes. This fact takes its toll on our skin: It loses its firmness, its youthful look and wrinkles start to appear.

The basic idea behind the marketing hype about collagen supplements is that by ingesting them you actually improve your body's own stock of the protein. In turn, this increased quantity will help your skin regain its youthful firmness and resilience and your wrinkles will disappear.

In reality, however, there is nothing further from the truth.

If you search in books and in blogs, nutrition scientists and dermatologists all agree that ingesting collagen is not necessarily the most effective way to erase wrinkles.

That is because, when digested, it is simply turned into amino acids, just like any other protein that we eat. There is no way that ingested collagen will transform into the same type that is produced by our own bodies.

The same applies about skin care products that list the much-desired protein in their ingredients. Rubbing the cream on your skin will not make the collagen contained in it to penetrate the surface, for the simple reason that its molecules are way too big in the first place!

Having said all this and cleared all the skin myths away, my advice for you is this: Don't waste your hard-earned money on either collagen supplements or creams that contain it. Instead, look for products with powerful natural ingredients, which will stimulate its production within your own body.

At least this is what I have done and I can assure you it works: After only a couple of weeks of treatment, my skin has started to feel smoother and has started to regain its youthful radiance.
