The basic design of the X10 centres around the huge 4 inch WVGA screen, the shiny finish to the phone is scratch resistant and makes for a smooth and pleasant handling experience, the phones slim line design makes it easy for the pocket and its general build feels sturdy and very reliable. The screen itself is incredibly sensitive and you will find yourself swiping your way from page-to-page quite comfortably. Sony Ericsson has chosen the 1.6 version of Android to run the X10 but they have given users the opportunity to upgrade this to the 2.1 version which will deliver a superior performance. The TimeScape interface is great for social network users; it stacks information form your social networks and inboxes into a spline of tiles, Facebook updates, tweets, messages and recent shared content are all given there own tiles and displayed in one place for a quick overview of what your friends are up to, this line can be set to update every 15 minutes but this wont do your battery life any favours. Facebook has been given its own dedicated application so your account can be managed from the X10s screen.

Sony Ericsson have equipped the Xperia X10 with loads of messaging support; it comes with POP compatibility and will handle Exchange accounts too, this means you will have no problem carrying your personal and/or business inbox around with you, you will never be more than a tap away. To set up your mobile e-mail account you simply type in your address and password to and the rest is handled for you, the best part of this arrangement is that all received e-mails are shown as there own tile in the TimeScape spline. The web browsing experience on the X10 is superb, the Swedish-Japanese communications experts have stuck with the Google based WebKit browser, the 1GHz processor rockets you through web pages at turbo speeds and the in-browser controls make the whole process even smoother as they are easy to use. The browser enables you to save bookmarks and the infinite text reflow means no matter how much you zoom the text will be resized to fit the screen.

The Sony Ericsson is well endowed with an 8 mega pixel digital camera, it handles still capture and videos perfectly well and you can share all of your amateur photography and video clips with the world via sharing with various social networks and the ever popular YouTube. The MediaScape feature essentially does the same as TimeScape, only with your media; all of your photos, videos and music are all brought together in one easy to manage application. Sony Ericsson has been quite generous with there memory, not only do you get an 8GB microSD as standard, but you can upgrade it to 16GB.

Sony Ericsson developed this device to compete with the bigger names in the Smartphone market, it is a fine attempt and I can understand what they have tried to do, there are future opportunities for software updating which will bring an Adobe flash player and multi touch for the browser along with improved social network integration. Sony Ericsson users will be satisfied with this handset, but will they manage to win over Nokia and Samsung users and maybe, perhaps some iPhone users? The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has a long way to go, but the journey has just begun.
