, in the past embroidery was handcrafted using a needle and thread and sometimes yarn. There are many type of materials that can be used in embroidery, beads, pearls to add a little flare many people add metal strips, sequins or quills. Stitch from the top or stitch through the fabric either way it can be done, it all depends on where you want to place the stitch. In many places embroidery is known as short stitches.

When doing embroidery the tiniest stitch is also known as the embroidery stitch. The use of Candle wicking is knots that are looped around to form a figure 8; this figure 8 goes around the needle. There are many different stitches to make embroidery patterns, the stitches used can be different or the same, one of the known ways to create a pattern is to chart on paper, or use a pre-made design done in paint or if daring enough try to embroider using the freehand technique.

When you think of embroidery many people don't realize that it has been around for hundreds of years. Mainly embroidery has been used to add decoration style and to bedazzle garments and fabrics with all types of different objects or materials and are stitched with thread. To add ornamentation you need to use the proper skills of needlework. Embroiders use many different skills and different ways to embroider, one way to do it is by hand, this does take a while to do, the more modern way is to use an embroidery machine.

The types of thread used today in embroidery have increased significantly. There is now rayon, cotton, silks, yarns and many other types of material are used today. When first learning most learn what is called the loop stitch, this is when the needle goes up through the fabric then returns by going back down using the same hole.

Embroidery Machines come in different flavors and styles, some you need to attach a hoop, these hoops can vary in size. Today to hold the fabric down the machines you something called a darning foot, this darning foot does not go down on the fabric, plus to hold the fabric in place it does not need to be fed under it. Since the invention of computer technology and the ability to make chips smaller and faster these have been added to embroidery machines to help with design and efficiency, the quality from these machines are second to none.

As technology keeps advancing these new machines are much easier to work, the new software enables the operator to control the machines with ease. The software of the machines are programmed specifically to create designs that are fancy and complex, the computer has the ability to create these complex designs with no problem. There are so many new types of thread that these machines can use, one of the newest is the metallic thread, the other types are polyester and rayon, as the machines become more and more advanced new threads will be developed for the market.
