The Basics Of The Hazare Movement

2011 has been marked in India by protests and demonstrations from across India and communities of non-resident Indians all across the world

. The height of the movement was in April 5, 2011 when Anna Hazare went on hunger strike to protest corruption in governance as well as a demand to pass a true anti-corruption measure in Parliament.

The crux of the protest movement is the passage of the Jan Lokpal Bill. This bill is all about curtailing corruption in governance. Much of the funding and costs of doing business in the country is lost through corruption and kickbacks government officers demand and receive. It has now become standard procedure for people to pay off government officers even for legally receivable public services.

When a version of the Lokpal Bill was passed, it was criticized for being toothless and without any real effect. To this, Anna Hazare declared that he would go an Indefinite Fast, similar to what Mohandas Gandhi did, until a true version of the Lokpal Bill was passed. The Lokpal Bill would create a system to curtail corruption of judges, allowing the Lokpal to dismiss officers guilty of corruption as well as monitor corruption through a representative system called the Lokayuktas.

As a result of the protest, an arrest order was issued against Hazare for intending to defy prohibitory orders. This was when the fast was started and as soon as word got out of the Hazare arrest, many protestors took to the streets to criticize the government for the arrest and the lack of concrete action on corruption in India. These protests swelled not only in the many cities and states of India but to international communities as well. Despite governmental action to quell the dissent and protests, the furor over the inaction and delay has forced many to resign and to make concessions for the peace and order in India.

Now, the Indian parliament is still in discussion and debate over the Jan Lokpal Bill's final content. Parties in Parliament have agreed to the basic principles of the proposed legislation, there is still many tactics as well as horsetrading involved to finally create a law to achieve the goals of the Jan Lokpa Bill. In the meantime, Hazare and their supporters both locally and internationally have kept vigil on the progress of the landmark legislation. Ultimately, the Indian people would be the beneficiaries of these protests to eradicate corruption and week out the malefactors in office.
