The air gap between the two panes of glass also has acoustic insulating properties. Choosing asymmetric glazing, as opposed to conventional symmetrical systems, improves the acoustic attenuation properties of the windows. The acoustic insulating properties of double glazing depend on the material used between the two panes of glass. The most widely used material for sound dampening is laminated glass with an inert glass in between.

Double glazed windows are also safer as most come with laminated or toughened glass which reduces the chance of it shattering. If damage does occur this is not usually carried through to the second pane, hence giving double glazing a much higher degree of safety.
