The Best Golf Balls 2010

Golf balls are often the forgotten aspect of the modern golf game

. More often than not, they're the afterthought of the amateur golfer, bought last minute, and without much thought. Depending on your course, you might opt for the lake balls, because what's the point in buying new balls only to hit them in the Lake yourself? Now, I'm not going to argue that if you're prone to hitting balls into the Lake that you shouldn't buy lake balls but maybe those lake balls you bought are only trying to get home!

In all seriousness, there is a great deal to be said about choosing the right ball. If your game is fairly stable and you shoot a round of 90 or under, choosing the right ball can be the difference between two or three shots a round. It all depends on the course, if you're playing a course like Augustus you're going to want something that can really go the distance - a Titleist golf ball is probably your best bet. Of course Nike also make great balls for distance but they'll hurt your pocket more than is necessary.

At a course similar to St. Andrews, it's more likely that you'll need a ball that behaves on the green and is slightly heavier. In windy conditions you need to minimise the effect the wind can have on your game. Although it will knock distance off your shots, you're going to be under much more control than if you're hitting a DDH, or Top Flight distance. Titleist make some great balls for just this, the Titleist Pro V1, though expensive, should continue to get you the great distance you need. I hear they also drop onto the green as soon as you shout "SIT DOWN!" from 90 yards back. If only...

The truth is, there's a huge number of balls to choose from, and it can be a little overwhelming when you're in the pro shop trying to make a decision. If you have the time, open a packet of balls and check the weight of the one before you buy. If it's windy, go for a heavy ball, if it's a lovely day, go for a ball with a huge amount of spin.

As always, practise your game before you expect to a ball to be the difference between you being a pro and an average Joe. The driving range is your friend.
