The Carrot Tail Leopard Gecko

About four decades ago, people in the United States did not know much about this leopard gecko as a pet

. At that time this reptile was caught from its natural habitat in the desert of Mid Asia and being imported by traders into the State.

In their natural habitat geckos can be clearly grouped into species and subspecies. It is the nature that maintains the breeding of each and every species accordingly, hence cross breeding does not occur in this bare nature. It was only the effort of man to cross breed geckos among species and unintentionally resulting in various genetic modifications. One is the outstanding morph variation from generation to generation of the geckos.

Morph is referred to the color pattern and size of the leopard gecko as well as other genetic traits compared to the original gecko. A specific color pattern is genetically based and can be passed to its next generation by the means of selective breeding by a professional breeder.

The majority of different morphs are found unintentionally in breed farms. At present there are lots of gecko morph available in the marketplace that you can chose from. Two of the recessive morphs are the Blizzards and Murphy Patternless. You can also find the dominant morphs like Enigma or the complete dominant Macksnow, while the co-dominant Giants, the combination morphs R.A.P.T.O.Rs and polygenetic morphs such as S.H.T.C.T are also common gecko pets

Carrot tail is considered as an extraordinary trait among geckos. Carrot tails can be found in different morphs. It is commonly found in R.A.P.T.O.Rs and Albey's Tangerine. Other gecko morphs that possess this carrot tail trait are the Tangerine morph, Hypo morph, the albino strains of Rainwater, Tremper and Bell, Murphy Patternless and a bit in the Blizzards.

Those morphs are all included in the carrot tail leopard geckos. This tail which is named after a carrot has plenty amount of orange pigments, hence called carrot tail. This orange pigment could be normally found at the tail base, but there also geckos that have up to 90% of their tail covered by the pigment.

To be considered as a carrot tail gecko, it should have a minimum of a quarter or 15% of its tail covered by the orange pigment. The amount of coloring may vary from just a thin band at the tail base to a solid orange tail as seen in rare cases.

This carrot tail trait is considered as line bred, meaning if two carrot tail geckos are bred together, it is most likely that their offspring are carrot tail geckos too. To increase the intensity of the orange color in an offspring, you can breed two carrot geckos with the most amount of pigment.

Another trait of a gecko is the carrot head, which is typically an orange spot on the gecko's head and is an exclusive trait of the Tremper Albino. This carrot head trait is also considered as a line bred.

Do you want to breed your own carrot tail leopard gecko? Well, it is quite possible, but you should consider the needed time, space and resources to perform the breeding and look after the gecko babies. You should have a clear plan on how to sell them right away or raise them by yourself. In short, your house and family should be ready to take all the consequences of breeding your carrot tail leopard geckos.
