The Cause And Effect Of Dry Eyes

When your eyes are streaming with tears and are burning

, hot, sandy, scratchy and dry, you want to cry a river but the river seems to have run dry. Wait a minute. If tears are streaming down your face, how can your eyes be dry?

Streaming tears are a major symptom of dry eye syndrome. There are various reasons why this might happen to a person's eyes. Read on as we take a journey of discovery to find out what causes this condition.

This syndrome is an age old problem, pun intended. Ageing is one of the contributing factors to this problem. As the body ages the tears that help keep our eyes healthy decrease. When the decrease in tears happens it will cause all the discomforts that are experienced with this syndrome. There are environmental reasons for this to happen to the eyes as well. Allergies, dry air blowing in the face and medications can also cause a person's tear production to be reduced.

There are two types of tears that are produced by the eye ducts. One is the lubricating tears and the other is known as reflex tears. The lubricating tears are produced through the day and keep the eye surface moist and help keep debris out. These tears are composed of mucous, proteins, oils, and antibodies.

Reflex tears, on the other hand, are the first aid medics for your eyes. Reflex tears are the tears that will run down your face when something gets in your eye and irritates the surface of the eye. Smoke in the air can also cause the eyes to react in this manner. This flood of tears can also be the result of the eyes not producing enough of the lubricating tears to keep the surface of the eye moist.

It is an unfortunate fact, but hereditary conditions can also be the reason a person would suffer from dry eye syndrome. If your parents have allergies, it is a good bet that you will too. Allergies, especially seasonal allergies, will kick off the reflex tears and your eyes will feel itchy and might burn also.

Your sleep habits can also cause dry eye syndrome. A constantly blowing fan will dry your eyes out if you happen to be one of the people who don't close your eyes completely while you are sleeping. Air conditioning is another culprit of dry eyes. Add a fluorescent light and your eyes will respond by becoming strained and dry.

Don't despair! For those who suffer from dry eyes there are some resolutions that can be implemented to relieve your problem. Some of the resolutions include:

Prescription medication

Artificial tears

Punctal plugs

Sunglasses

With these resolutions you can relieve the dry eyes, but if your problem is persistent you should have your eyes checked by a physician and make sure that your dry eye problem is not just a symptom of something more serious. Regular check-ups are essential to keeping your eye health right on target.
