Though in today's society it is easy to take for granted the level of comfort and support that you get from a loving family environment, there a lot of children that for many reasons cannot live with their parents, so they need to find alternative care.

Luckily, foster care in the UK is on the increase as more and more families discover the benefits to providing a home and support to the country's most vulnerable children. This increase has been possible thanks to the growing level of information that is readily available to foster families, so that whatever their situation is, they know that they have a firm support network in place to help see them through it.

Fostering a child, or even many children as a lot of families do through their lifetime, is one of the single biggest decisions a family can make, as fostering isn't for everybody. As the name suggests, a fostering family is one who can open their door to a child most in need, and introduce that child into their lives. Though fostering is hugely rewarding, it does come with its challenges, and helping a child become all they can be is perhaps the greatest one.

If you are considering becoming a foster carer, consider all of the challenges that you may face before you make your mind up. Is your home life as stable and welcoming as it could be? How will your family adjust to another member, and will your children understand why there is a new person living in their home and getting just as much attention as them? These are all issues that need to be discussed before you foster, as a shift in your domestic dynamic can bring with it unexpected behaviour, especially from young children, but of course this can also bring families closer together too.

Also many looked after children only need a new home for a very short amount of time as their own situation is not safe for whatever reason. In cases like this, it can be hard for a fostering family to say goodbye to the child they may have been caring for for months or years even, and this can often bring with it a fear for the child's safety.

However, the rewards of foster care are plentiful and will have a deep impact in the foster carer's life. Imparting your own experience onto a child in order to help them become all they can be is the most gratifying aspect, but fostering a child also helps teach families solid moral values which otherwise can often be overlooked.

Like looking after any child though, it requires time, commitment, patience and the ability to show love where others sometimes can't.
