The Checkerboard Coaching Technique SM for Scoring Ricochet Goals in the NHL
The Checkerboard Coaching Technique SM was developed for professional hockey first. Daniel C. Bryndle the developer, knew Donny Bauer the owner of Bauer Skate Company, of Kitchener Ontario in the late 1960's, and worked in hockey sales for over 15 years. He fitted professional and college players with Frank Rowe, the greatest hockey skate fitter of his time. His first application of the (CCT) technique in a major sport, came in hockey.
This article is written for Professional Hockey teams and players in an effort to optimize their performance. Here is how the technique works. We all know that a checkerboard has squares in it. Imagine you have a blank one on your desk and in each blank space you put a segment of your game where the ricochet was a factor. To assist I will give some examples. Off the goal post, off an opposing player, off the boards to set up a goal, off the stick of a player, off the skate of a player and so on. It is very important that you fill in as many as possible.
The second step in this process is to understand that 20 percent of your game accounts for 80 percent of your results. One example might be that 20 percent of the shots you take account for 80 percent of your goals. The author of the (CCT) has studied and applied the
2080 rule to hundreds of solutions for over 32 years. This Law of the Significant Few (2080) is so effective it can be applied to every aspect of hockey and any player or team that applies it fully will maximize their game. You will now understand the ricochet is not an accident that causes a loss, but an intended strategy that creates a goal and a win.
Let's take one example to illustrate. Ask yourself how many times has a ricochet caused your team to loose. Now conversely how many times did it cause your team to win. Once you establish this as a technique to score goals, and use it with intent, and you team mates understand this is the team approach to one aspect of scorning goals, the fun begins. Each player will try the ricochet in his own way at the moment he sees the opportunity. He may shoot at a defenseman on the opposing team from a blind spot on the ice, with the intent of ricocheting the puck off his pads. He may say to himself that if it falls dead on the ice, because this is a tem technique, his players near that defenseman are looking for it. This has two important results.
The opposing goalie will understand this team is not shooting at him alone to score goals, they are shooting at anyone in front of the net to deflect the puck in the net. Goalies are funny and quirky, and this will be an added dimension to his game he cannot control. Use the ricochet wisely. Fake the shot at the defenseman after you shot at him several times, then shoot at the open space in the goal that is the goalies twenty percent area. To highlight this approach give one player the ricochet award after each game. Now go back to your checkerboard, and list the top 20 percent of what you wrote in the boxes that is most effective way to take advantage of this and begin the process there. There will be no doubt's about what you need to do once your ricochet game has gone through a CCT analysis.
